Ascuns de barierele timpului si spatiului, Universul a fost in cea mai mare parte a vremii necunoscut, neexplorat, ramanand dincolo de posibilitatile de cunoastere ale omului. Dar aceste bariere ale imposibilului au inceput sa se deschida in fata realizarilor omului. Prin geniul sau creator, el a reusit sa ridice putin cate putin valul ce acoperea enigmele Cosmosului, privind uimit la noile cai ce se deschideau in fata. A trebuit sa modifice multe din ideile pe care le avea asupra energiei si raspandirii substantei din Univers, dar cea mai importanta cucerire a fost intarirea convingerii ca nu exista lucruri imposibil de cunoscut.  Din cele mai vechi timpuri omul a contemplat bolta instelata, intrebandu-se: ce este cerul? Ce legi ii guverneaza miscarea? Dar singurul lucru pe care il putea face era sa observe cele circa 6000 de stele vizibile cu ochiul liber si sa le noteze pozitiile in asa numitele constelatii. El nu avea de unde sa stie ca Soarele este o stea si ca stelele isi datoreaza neobosita stralucire focului termonuclear care arde in adancul lor. Nu avea de unde sa stie ca planetele - asa a numit el aceste stele ratacitoare pe bolta cereasca - cu toata stralucirea lor nu erau stele, ci corpuri intunecate a caror lumina era reflectarea, ca intr-o oglinda, a celei primite de la Soare. Pana acum cateva secole, dintr-o mandrie explicabila prin nivelul de atunci al conostintelor sale, omul si-a plasat planeta, Pamantul, in centrul Universului, considerand-o inconjurata de toate celelalte corpuri ceresti. Abia in anul 1543, astronomul polonez Nicolas Copernic a "indraznit" sa rastoarne aceasta imagine. El a demonstrat ca Pamantul se misca in jurul Soarelui si nu invers, punand bazele a ceea ce numim noi azi  HYPERLINK "http://www.freehomepages.com/astronomie/sistemsolar.html" Sistemul Solar .  Organizarea Sistemului Solar propusa de Copernic (sistem care se numeste si heliocentric, adica cu Soarele in centru) a fost o idee revolutionara pentru timpul sau. Dar sistemul heliocentric propus de Copernic a fost aspru criticat de Biserica Catolica, institutie care, din considerente religioase adoptase sistemul geocentric, adica cel care avea in centrul sau Pamantul. Pentru ca au sustinut si dezvoltat ideea heliocentrica, nu putini invatati au avut de suferit din ordinul Bisericii. Totusi ideea lui Copernic era inca departe de realitate, deoarece el considera ca Soarele este centrul intregului Univers. Modelul lui a predominat insa pana in epoca moderna, pana la inventarea fotografiei si a marilor telescoape. Abia in prima jumatate a secolului XX marile intrumente astronomice au aratat ca unele "stele neclare", numite de astronomi "nebuloase", nu sunt doar niste nori de gaz in apropierea noastra, in Sistemul Solar, ci reprezinta galaxii, vaste aglomerari de stele, aflate la distante uriase de Pamant. Soarele, Pamantul si planetele celelalte, impreuna cu stelele vizibile si inca multe altele ce nu pot fi vazute de ochiul liber, fac si ele parte dintr-o astfel de galaxie, galaxia noastra. Vazuta de undeva, din mare departare, ea are forma de disc, cu o usoara umflatura in centru. Deoarece Sistemul Solar este situat in planul de simetrie al discului, acesta poate fi vazut in serile senine sub forma unei benzi luminoase care brazdeaza cerul, banda numita Calea Lactee.  In zilele noastre, instrumentele perfectionate si sondele spatiale au largit enorm orizontul cunoasterii. Imaginile obtinute cu ajutorul telescoapelor au atins frontiere de nebanuit ale Universului, de miliarde de ani lumina, iar analiza lor atenta arata o densitate neinchipuit de mare de galaxii. De pilda, numai in regiunea de pe cer delimitata de cele patru stele ce formeaza constelatia Carul Mare, cu ajutorul unui telescop pot fi vazute (pe cliseele fotografice) ... un milion de galaxii! Lasand la o parte incercarile de explicatii, mai mult sau mai putin fundamentate stiintific, care au fost date pentru intelegerea Universului, de-a lungul unei istorii zbuciumate, in prezent cucerirea treptata a legilor obiective ale naturii a permis oamenilor de stiinta sa elaboreze un scenariu al modelului lumii in care traim, reusind sa fixeze in timp si in spatiu originea si evolutia Universului. A Universului din care face parte imensitatea de galaxii, printre care si galaxia noastra, din care face parte Sistemul Solar si Pamantul.  In incercarile sale de a explora trecutul Universului, care se estimeaza la miliarde de ani, omul este foarte aproape de situatia unui fluture cu viata de o zi care, traind in padure, nu are cum sa observe cresterea copacilor. Oricum insa, omul are cum sa deduca evolutia unui copac din padure, de pilda. El poate gasi semintele copacilor, lastari, copaci maturi, cat si ramasitele copacilor batrani si uscati. In felul acesta, prin imaginatie si rationament el poate deduce cum apare, creste si moare un copac. Acelasi lucru este valabil si cu ciclurile din natura, care sunt insa mult mai mari si mult mai lente. De pilda, chiar si steaua cu viata cea mai scurta - caci si stelele se nasc si mor - dureaza cat milioane de vieti omenesti. Examinand insa un mare numar de stele in diferite stadii ale dezvoltarii lor, se poate intelege usor ciclul nasterii si mortii stelelor. Acest proces din Univers este continuu si zilnic deschis observatiilor. Astronomia, stiinta generala care studiaza structura si evolutia astrilor, a Universului, urmarind fenomenele pe care i le ofera cerul, ca o carte larg deschisa, prezinta omului contemporan un Univers care pulseaza de energie si, totodata, schema evolutiei sale. Istoria Universului nostru incepe la un moment care a fost stabilit acum circa 16 miliarde de ani, cand toata substanta si energia care ne inconjoara pana la cele mai nebanuite departari a fost concentrata intr-un volum foarte mic ca o mica sfera foarte fierbinte. Din cauze inca necunoscute de stiinta mica sfera a inceput sa se dilate, ca un fel de explozie uriasa, racindu-se pe masura ce isi marea volumul. Materialul primordial din care era alcatuita sfera a inceput sa se modeleze in particule materiale - protoni, neutroni si electroni - care, prin ciocniri si asocieri repetate, au fortmat atomii celor mai simple elemente chimice - hidrogenul si heliul. Totodata s-a facut simtita forta gravitationala, care face ca doua corpuri sa se atraga reciproc.  Desigur, evenimentele prezentate mai sus au fost deduse teoretic de oemenii de stiinta si ele explica foarte bine evolutia ulterioara a Universului. Evenimentele s-au desfasurat intr-o extrem de lunga perioada de timp. Ipoteza prevede ca au trebuit sa treaca milioane de ani de la acea presupusa explozie pentru ca in Universul timpuriu particulele elementare sa se combine, formand atomi de hidrogen si heliu, ca prime compozitii chimice. O data cu stabilirea compozitiei chimice a Universului, evenimentele au luat un curs ce poate fi mai usor imaginat pe baza fenomenelor chimice si fizice cunoscute. Astfel, se presupune ca atomii de hidrogen si heliu, sub actiunea fortelor de atractie care se manifesta intre ei, s-au aglomerat la inceput in nori uriasi, apoi, pe masura ce fortele de atractie se manifestau din ce in ce mai puternic, norii s-au fragmentat in formatiuni mai mici, indepartandu-se unii de altii. Acum imaginea Universului era cea a unui spatiu imens in care se miscau in toate directiile nori fierbinti de hidrogen si heliu care insa se spargeau in continuare, in interiorul lor, in fragmente din ce in ce mai mici si mai reci. Situatia poate fi comparata cu producerea picaturilor de ploaie intr-un nor: prin racirea norului, se formeaza mici picaturi de apa, dar care inca mai fac parte din nor (pana cand ating conditiile de ploaie). Tot astfel, un nor de hidrogen si heliu (care a fost numit protogalaxie), se poate fragmenta in "mici picaturi de gaz", mai reci, care schimba oarecum structura protogalaxiei din care fac parte. Cat de mare erau " picaturile de gaz" dintr-o protogalaxie? Doar cateva luni lumina (fata de cea a protogalaxiei care era de un milion de ori mai mare!) Dar lucrul cel mai important este ca aceste "picaturi de nor", reci si totodata intunecate, erau "embrioni de stele" sau "protostele". Acum gravitatia incepea sa fie principalul motor al evolutiei materiei din Univers. Ea actiona din ce in ce mai puternic in micile aglomerari intunecate de gaz, care astfel se strangeau din ce in ce mai mult spre centrul lor, comprimandu-se. Dar prin comprimare gazul se incalzeste, tot asa cum se incalzeste capatul unei pompe de bicicleta cand este folosita la umflarea unei roti. In interiorul protostelelor insa temperatura creste enorm si o data cea a fost atinsa temperatura de zece milioane de grade, intre nucleele de hidrogen din zona centrala incepe sa se produca reactii termonucleare. Reactiile termonucleare reprezinta, in mare, un foc de o natura cu totul diferita de cel care este cunoscut in cazul arderii combustibililor obisnuiti. Focul termonuclear degaja o caldura si o lumina de o intensitate colosala, langa care nu ar putea rezista nici un fel de substanta obisnuita. In momentul in care s-a aprins focul termonuclear, protosteaua a devenit stea. Ne putem imagina acest moment din istoria Universului. Totul in jur era haotic si stralucirea norilor incandescenti de hidrogen si heliu incepea sa se stinga in spatele fragmentelor intunecate pe care le-au format. Brusc, o mica scanteie de lumina a stralucit rosiatica in intuneric... A palapait, s-a stins, apoi a izbucnit intr-o stralucire de diamant, ramanand ca un briliant luminos pe catifeaua intunecata a haosului, aruncand o lumina constanta. Aceasta prima stea a fost curand urmata de altlele, de diferite dimensiuni si straluciri, si treptat, in curs de milioane si milioane de ani, Universul a inceput sa se apropie de forma pe care o cunoastem azi. Universul timpuriu era insa steril, ca un desert stancos lipsit de viata deoarece la inceput au fost formati doar atomi de hidrogen si heliu, din "oceanul" de particule elementare rezultate in urma "marii explozii". Elementele chimice mai grele, inclusiv cele componente ale vietii ca oxigenul, azotul, carbonul si fosforul inca nu existau. Producerea unor astfel de atomi s-a dovedit a fi dramatica, solicitand un "mare sacrificiu cosmic": moartea stelelor! Numai prin moartea stelelor, in miezul lor se puteau naste acele elemente chimice care permit aparitia vietii. Ciclurile de nastere si de moarte a stelelor au continuat timp de circa 10 miliarde de ani. Grupuri de galaxii - care sunt aglomerati vaste de stele, praf si gaz - unele sferice, altele in forma de elipsoid sau chiar lipsite de forma precisa - se indepartau continuu unele de altele. Din aceasta multime de galaxii, unele au evoluat spectaculos, luand frumoase forme spirale, rotindu-se incet, ca uriase roti ceresti.
